Why the Theory Test?

Why the Theory Test?

Tuesday 19th November 2024

The whole point of the Theory Test is that Learner Drivers have a minimal level of understanding the rules of the road before they are allowed to take a practical driving test. It is a useful tool for road safety, but it is far from perfect.

The "Theory Test" consists of two parts: a multiple choice section and a hazard perception test.

The multiple choice section seems to be the part that many people struggle with. I think that one of the issues that people have is the way they prepare for the test.

A popular method is learning by App. This is useful but remember that the questions and scenarios are based on the DVSA publications, the primary source is the Highway Code. Unfortunately, App learning is a method that relies upon recognising a question and associating it with the answer. But this doesn't develop "understanding." When you're driving down a motorway and you see a sign it's no good having your "Best Guess," you need to KNOW.

Driving is a "Thinking Game" it involves correct judgement and decision making all based on solid understanding and knowledge.

Don't treat the Theory Test lightly, it's an essential part of learning to drive and also after your test. It's very important to keep up to date with all the rules and procedures, because things change. Try asking someone who has been driving for thirty years about the procedure for leaving the emergency area on a smart motorway and the majority will struggle!

So do read the Highway Code, because if you don't not only are you likely to fail a test but you will be severely lacking in your driving ability.
